Chikpiks CMJ Day 3 Edition
Damn you, College Music Journal. I don't have enough time to upload anything from last night's show before I have to start touting what's going on today. Sigh. So, but first:
On Chichi212, recap of Tuesday's New Zealand showcase at Red Bull Space, which featured Die Die Die, below.
The xx play at the Soho Apple store at 7 tonight, right after a photo shoot and interview with...me. It's free and I'm not aware that this is an official CMJ show, but of all the buzz bands in town right now, The xx are by far the buzziest, so it's a must-go.
Then, of course, if you're looking for some double-o soul, there's this:
Finnish band Rubik plays at 8 at the Arts and Crafts showcase at Union Pool. I missed out on them last night, but I have it on good authority that it was a huge, huge mistake.
Lastly, this has nothing to do with CMJ, but over at the Village Voice, Rob Harvilla has written a Pulitzer-worthy essay on how, despite what the mainstream publications tell you, "Brooklyn hipsterism," is not a movement, of any sort. In fact, it's hardly even a thing, like, at all. Thank you, Rob.

PB&J are BRM Band of the Week
Who knew John Eriksson (right), the drummer for Swedish pop gods Peter Bjorn and John, made all those phat boutique beats on Living Thing just with his mouth?
The band is on tour this summer with Depeche Mode (they played MSG last Monday) and paused to talk to me.
Peter Bjorn and John are Beyond Race Mag's Band of the Week.

Beyond Race Magazine Third Anniversary Show ,Tuesday 7/21 at Santos Party House
Soulstress Maya Azucena and band.
The Fat Jew (this is his actual stage name, no joke) from Team Facelift. The trio's Web site states, "Our aim is basically to do to rap what Elton John did to being gay." Let's face it, that's really all you need to know.

BRM knows party III: The Big Time
Illustrious iconoclastic publication Beyond Race Magazine is turning 3 years old on Tuesday, and to celebrate they've booked a rather incredible lineup at Andrew W.K.'s premiere downtown showspot. All of the featured artists appear well in the upcoming summer issue, where you'll also find my feature on The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, from which an extended interview with frontman Kip Berman ran in a previous post here.
I don't often use the overdone Internet-meme superlative "epic," but at the risk of overstating myself, this is by far the most epic party in American history.
Advance tickets can be purchased at the Santos website.
